Englewood, Florida has a history that dates back more than one hundred years. Originally settled in 1884 by Herbert Nicholas and his brothers, whom came to the area in hopes of beginning a lemon business.
In 1897 the population was only 86, however, by 1898 Englewood and the surrounding area had ballooned to more than 250 people. In 1910 the town of Englewood by itself had a census bureau count of 75 permanent residents, today that has grown to figure of over 50,000 and enlarges to 75,000 in the winter months.
After a decade supporting a growing lumber industry, by 1923 most of the Englewood area had succumb to the rigors of deforestation and was promoted as mostly a tourist area or a place to raise a family. This philosophy quickly took root and Englewood started to grow slowly and liesurely, much like the pace of life we know today.
1927 brought the first bridge across Lemon Bay to Manasota Key. The toll was 50 cents at the time. The bridge has since been rebuilt twice. In 1948 the telephone arrived with a listing of 46 residents. In 1956 there was only one part-time sheriff on duty, and this serves as a reflection of the safety and comfort that we all share in Englewood even to this day. This brief history is only a part of what the real Englewood is about. As you stroll along the beach next time perhaps stop and talk with someone and maybe they will share their own piece of Englewood's history.
